Jury Duty Scam DO NOT DELETE WITHOUT READING ! Pass this on.

Although this was first publish in 2005, it's never too much to be reminded of something like this. So beware, it potentially still could be going. So be careful!!!!

This has been verified by the FBI (their link is also included below). Please pass this on to everyone in your email address book. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty, that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced.

The caller claims to be=2 0a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo; your identity was just stolen.

The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma , Illinois , and Colorado . This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system. The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

Suppose the real test of any situation like this is the "Social Security" number. Chances are, if someone is asking for it, then they are running a scam. If they don't have it already and it is legit, then something is wrong.

Thanks for letting us know!

Never give out your SSN unless you are sure who you are talking to is legit. If you're unsure, ask for their number and call back or call back to a number you know it belongs to the bank, government agency, or whomever you are doing business with that requires it.

Just want to make sure everyone is aware of a scam like this is out there. Like Spdpilot said, most government agency knows your info already, they will ask for your last 4 (sometimes) but your DOB or street number on your address or home phone number just to verify who you are. Also, jury summons will have your group number and a summon number and that is what they will ask for.
