Monitors: Jihadist threats to Navy increasing

By Philip Ewing - Staff writer

Jihadist threats online against U.S. warships in the Middle East have spiked since just before the New Year, according to a monitoring group in Washington, including some of the most ambitious calls yet for terror attacks specifically on the Navy and sailors.

One Dec. 30 post, translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute, calls for readers to assemble and submit information about American ships and their crews in chilling detail:

“Information on every U.S. naval unit — and only U.S. [units]! — should be quietly gathered [as follows:] [The vessel’s] name, the missions it is assigned; its current location …; the advantages of this naval unit; the number of U.S. troops on board, including if possible their ranks, and what state they are from, their family situation, and where their family members (wife and children) live; what kind of weapons they carry; the [vessel’s] destination …; the missions it has carried out; the way to monitor it around the clock; if its location is changed, define its movements and its route; monitor every Web site used by the personnel on these ships, and attempt to discover what is in these contacts.”

The writer, whose handle is “Ubada bin Al-Samit” and who posted on a Web forum called Al-Falluja, assured readers every item would be useful:

“My Muslim brothers, do not underestimate the importance of any piece of information, as simple as it may seem; the mujahideen, the lions of monotheism, may be able to use it in ways that have not occurred to you.”

The posts were provided to Navy Times by MEMRI spokesman Richard Wachtel, who said his group does not usually see comments that call so specifically to target American warships. Also significant, he said, was that the post was a response to an official call from the Yemeni terror group, al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, to Muslims: “Kill the crusaders in the Arabian Peninsula on land, in the air, and at sea.”

The Yemeni branch of al-Qaida has been in an international spotlight after a man linked to it allegedly tried to blow up an airliner over Detroit on Christmas Day.

A Jan. 4 post on another jihadist site alluded both to the failed attack and to the pending “threat” to American warships, Wachtel said.

“We have attacked you on land and in the air ... and soon [we will attack] in the sea ... . Al-Qaida’s troops, especially those in the Arab Peninsula, have expertise in this area. Their first naval operations ... were the destruction of the [destroyer] Cole [in 2000] and of the French oil tanker [Limburg in 2002].”

As in posts on any topic across the Internet, the terror sites apparently include their share of bluster and bravado: Neither the Cole nor the Limburg were “destroyed” after their respective attacks.

Cmdr. Chris Sims, a spokesman for 5th Fleet in Bahrain, told Navy Times that officials there “[take] all threats, real or perceived, very seriously and therefore maintain a constant high level of vigilance to ensure the safety of our personnel both ashore and afloat.”

I so believe in this!!! My Mom was asking me "what happened to spouses and friends of military not talking about them?" I went to my hairdresser a few weeks ago and this girl in the chair next to mine was telling her hairdresser which is of german descent and who has friends speaking with him in german, as she is detailing all of her bf's whereabouts and about the bases around the U.S., seal team ventures etc... I mean so much info that I wanted to whack her to get her to shut up!!!!

The age of most of the people who talk too much think that they are making themselves "important" to the eyes of others. This generation is the Me..Me..Me...generation. Something needs to be done, I don't want my hubby being injured or worse as he is doing what he loves most!!! And for it to be because of some young dumb blonde (person who was in the chair), thinking that she is bringing some sort of status to herself and by possibly getting others killed by her dumb mouth would be very very sad. I'm sorry, it makes me livid to no end!!

I agree with you! I had a Navy Seal for a long spell (love of my life. Broke my heart) anyway, I NEVER asked and he NEVVVER told me anything.
I don't want to know. That way I have less in my brain, lol, to worry about and I NEVER want to know what is being done to take care of business. Much better, much safer for all concerned.

CommSec has always been preached to all of us in the military. It is more prevelent now with internet and email, anybody can get non-secure and even secured communication. So it is up to all those in the military to keep movement and mission as classified information as it should be. It should not be discussed with anybody, friends, family, or whomever. Those information should not be discussed anyways. Those in the military should know better then to discuss them.

And for those with family in the military and those topics come up, keep it to yourself, nobody needs to know. As stated in the posts above, you never know who is listening and what they will do with those information, but you can be sure, if you open your mouth, you could be the one responsible for the death and injuries to American military personnel or Americans.

Well said sdsubzie! You can bet your bottom dollar that if your lips are flappin' you WILL be heard and you WILL be seen. I'm not trying to make people nervous it is just the truth. It's like you flip off someone in traffic and it turns out to be someone you have a business appointment with even though you have not met them. Must be mindful of our words and actions.

This job I've been working the last three days; The owners do not live there as it is only their Summer mansion, but I can feel someone watching me. Not a perv or anything but someone having to do with the house. In fact the owner may even be inside and I would not know. You get the point.

Bye the bye....The house is just a few houses down from the most Northern gate at 'Nado on First. It's ok if I say this as you have already seen the house in some of my car pics and the owners are cool with that. Some of you may have seen me without knowing it's me. LOL

This is GREAT news for me.....augh

This shouldn't change the way you conduct yourself. Should have always been vigilant of threats when overseas, Americans are huge targets especially military personnel. This is nothing new in my opinion.

I know. What I'm trying to say, that shouldn't be anything new for you. It should have already SOP for you to be vigilants of the threats around you already. This should only make you more vigilants and make your people more aware of the threats you guys will be going into.

I think the whole reason this was posted can be summed up real quick:

1. You in the Military need to STFU about what you do and where you are going

2. Spouses, Female and Male, need to STFU if you are told any information

I think that about covered it

Yeppers, exactly what I read! too many times have I read peps telling tales that violate opsec, personally I don't want to read about you or anyone else getting greased due to info no matter how inconsequential or slight you may view it being passed on through an unsecured point. Be aware it may be monitored, remember your IA training pertaining to pieces of info being pieced together by various sources if you are military.
