If you’re one of those brand purists who hates weird engine swaps, just hit the back button now (although the title should have tipped you off). This swap takes two sacred items, Ford’s ’67 Shelby Mustang and GM’s LS2 engine, and dumps them together for a sharp, head-turning hybrid that some might scream is blasphemous.
This LS2-powered Shelby “G.T. LS2” was found over at the hybrid forums on LS1-tech.
These swaps are surprisingly straightforward, as the LS2 engine is only ¾ of an inch wider than the small block Windsor motors they originally came with. The shock towers didn’t have to be modded to first this modern engine either - it was a perfect fit. The 400 horsepower LS2 engine from the GTO provides more than enough punch for this classic, and the suspension got a lot of upgrades as well. For example - the Ford rear end has been replaced by a narrowed GM 12-bolt.
The suspension consists primarily of Total Control products from Chassisworks, including the steering rack, which was designed for a big-block Ford (to allow the LS2’s deeper oil pan to fit). It didn’t take a lot of custom work to get done, and the car looks sharp. The “G.T. LS2” stripe is sure to anger the purists, but it will get plenty of attention wherever it goes. It also has a T-56 six-speed manual transmission - the same that backed the GTO back when it was new. This will certainly raise some eyebrows.
