I was there this past week for work. I'm not military so I can't say much about the base. Whidbey Island itself and surrounding areas are more for retirees or mellow travelers. Not much to do other than your occasional pub or cantina.

PM HisPony , here was there for a while in Oak Harbor and from what I can tell, he's been there before and knows his way around more than I do.

Wondering where I am!?!?

Gotta agree with the above.

It is a rural area with more farms and tourists than anything else.

To get to Seattle you have to drive an hour south to catch the ferry, then another hour drive down in traffic.

I have spent 2 weeks there once and that was enough for me. I have also made numerous other trips all the same.

thanks for the input. sounds exciting to me. im looking for a small community type place, and an even smaller USMC community. been in san diego too long. my parents are in port orchard about 3 hours and a ferry ride south too . i jsut never found out if there were tracks there and i dont remember seeing too many mustangs. mostly ricers. i want to start a WS WASHINGTON...

is there a lot of outdoor type things to do. how are the houses, are they ghetto or nice.

I was in Oak Harbor for three years. It was depressing at first since I came from San Diego. The place really does grow on you though. Very small USMC community is a bonus for you. Base housing is nice if thats an option for you or the cost to buy a house is rather high. Summer time is great and winter is cold and wet. Nice place if you like the outdoors.

Be prepared to store your stang for the winter! They salt the roads in the winter for snow. Definatly get a beater for the winter.

Renting up there should be in your price range, I saw a lot of places with for rent signs. Ghetto is a hard thing to explain up there, more like "Redneck" trailer park would be a better explaination.

Another thing, the "Staties" don't mind pulling you over if you are 5 or more over the speed limit! Another trick the Staties like to do is sit along side the road with the lights on, you go blowing by thinking they have some one pulled over and they don't. Your A$$ is grass then.

yeah, i know all about the cops there. and everyone drives so SLOW. it sucks, but i do want an outdoors place. my wife has got my denali for the winter and i am gonna buy a certain yellow cobra ;) for the summer, so i will probably pick up a little old f150 or something. it doesnt snow much tho. this was a record year....lol. i really want to get up there. i would be non-deployable for awhile, that would be nice. the career jammer here mentioned intel again and $80k tax free out here. i am clueless on what to do.... thanks for all the input tho guys..i really appreciate it

I was stationed there from 01 to o4. It doesn't rain as much as everyone thinks. If I remember correctly, it's because it's located on the other side of the Cascade mountains which blocks some of the rain fall; I noticed when I lived there that it didn't rain too much in the spring/summer, but quite a bit in the fall/winter. There is not too much of a night life in Oak Harbor, but if you go to Pioneer Square, you can find a few local hangouts. I lived within walking distance of Pioneer Square. To get to the main interstate (I-5) it takes at least 30-45 min. Vancouver BC and Seattle are both about 2hrs away. There is a 1/4 mile drag strip, but it's in Bremerton.

yeah, i know about bremerton....my parents are near port orchard....just north. what were the houses like. anythng worth the money. i know BAH is only like 1000. not sure how nice of a house i could get for that. ive looked at CL and everything. did you live o the island or did you take a ferry to work? thats what im debating. i have pretty much made up my mind about going there. i can almost guarantee i am. there is a slight chance of HMX-1, in quantico, VA, but i doubt it. too nice for me
