Need advice on manual transmission repair

Our '98 Cobra's transmission is having a 5th gear problem. As soon as you put the changer in 5th it pops out of gear even before the clutch is let out.If you hold the handle in place with effort it will stay in gear.I took it to a shop called Dr. Trans in Kearny Mesa (they were recommended by a mechanic neighbor that I respect). They want to do a complete rebuild at a cost of about $1300.00 .Any advice on a cheap fix/cheap mechanic would be most appreciated.

we have a shop around here. That if you take the tranny out and take it to him. Normally only cost $400-$600 to rebuild. Depending on what it needs. I bould one with low miles on it out of a 2000 and had to change the tailshaft. I see them being sold for $400 to $600 in good shape. Just as easy to find one and swap them out. And do a clutch while your at it. By th way. The 96-mid 01 gthave the t45. The only thing that changed in 99 it they went to a digital speedo. Got a metal speedo gear rather than a plastic drive gear. 96-98 cobras have sam tranny. And I thing thhe 99 cobra does too

I'm sorry, I think that the drives to and from South Carolina outweigh the cost of doing it that cheaply.
