bought my stang about 2 months ago and im dealing with some play in the steering wheel. the steering assembly seem mounted ok and all the knuckles seem somlid but i cant get the damn play out. if u have any advise please help me out. thx
Outer tire rods are normally the fix for steering wheel play. there is also a rubberized dough nut of sorts that wears out in your steering shaft assembly. it connects the top potion to the bottom portion that goes into the rack and pinnion assembly. Check both. Tie rods are easy to check with two people. Jack car enough to look under, have friend turn steering wheel and watch the joints. they should have minimal movement side to side. The same thing with the "doughnut" NOMOVEMENT there!!!!! Hope this helps.
yea the insides of my tires were completly shot, i repaced them. i called the [previous owner and apperantly he lowwerd the car and didnt get and alignment and it was terrible, thats all fixed but i still get the [play. im a little unsure of the dough nuts yout talking about in the rack and pinion, do u have a picture or something to help me out
it would be in between the joints of the top one. That is kind of a bad example because that one is a solid set up but ya should get the point of where to look.
It is kind of a pain in the arse to change so I would make sure it is your problem first. You would have to get under the car. Take the bolt out holding the shaft in the rack and pinnion assembly, then take off the bolt that goes through the actual steering shaft (THIS IS THE PITA PART) and remove shaft assembly. The actual part is fairly cheap.
