New Law for Motorists in California

Here's a couple of new law that took effect on 1/1/09 that you may not be aware of:

1) GPS Devices: SB1567 requires that when a vehicle is being driven, any portable GPS device in use and affixed to the windshield must be located either in a 7-inch square in the lower right corner or in a 5-inch square in the lower left corner. The device cannot interfere with the deployment of an air bag. Motorists may still mount a GPS device on top of the dash as long as it doesn't block their view of the road. The fine for a violation is approximately $108, depending on the county.

2) Surcharges on Traffic and Parking Citations. SB 1407 raising surchares on traffic tickets by $35 and "fix-it" tickets by $15, parking tickets by $3 and court cost for attending traffic school by $25.

3) Parking Violations. AB2401 prevents a car owner from being held liable for a parking tickets or toll-evasion violation issued against a vehicle before he or she became the owner. Sfficient proof of nonownership includes, but is not limited to a copy of the sales agreement, showing the date of the vehicle ownership transfer.

4) No Text Messaging while Driving. Fines for a first offense is at least$76 and about $190 for subsequent offenses, depending on the county.

Thought this might be useful information.

Yeah right. The power cord doesn't reach that far!

SO If you have a built in Nav system from the factory on the center console, you cant be fined? would that not be more unsafe?

I got an extension cord for mine, so that made it work for the lower left corner.

I think that's right. If you're not passing, get out of the damn lane! I wish people here would learn that. That's why its call the "passing lane."

I agree there is a huge difference, but there are also signs on the freeway here saying slow traffic keep right. Oh yeah, most living in California can't read english or tell right from their left. Ooops, Sorry!

Stay out of the "passing lane" if you want to got 50mph. Its "mph" in the US not "km/h." This is not Mexico.

Just vaporize anything with Baja plates on it!

What I can't fathom is...

We have to pass smog, but millions of cars come across the ports of entry every year from Mexico that are gross polluters.

We should impose a $10 crossing fee for EVERY car coming in from Mexico and quite jerking the U.S. Citizens around!

Can you say NAFTA? Freaking joke! I personally call it a "criminal express"

Well a built in Nav won't let you change much when you are driving, so yeah, California laws do suck.

Yeah, put in in the lower left corner and now the power cord is going across your instrument panel and getting wrapped around the steering column.

Real bright!
