With Ford pushing its EcoBoost engine technology hard, and Carroll Shelby himself rumored to be working on a twin-turbo Mustang, a lot of rumors have been swirling regarding the future of the GT500. Will it keep its supercharged engine? Will it replace the supercharger for twin snails? What does the future hold for the snake?
Well according to Autoblog, who sat down with Mike Harrison, Ford’s chief engineer for the new 5.0 liter V8, we won’t be seeing a twin turbo GT500 anytime soon.
Why? According to Harrison, it would be almost impossible to execute such a plan because the upcoming 5.0 engine leaves almost no room in the engine bay to fit two turbochargers. The headers take up all the room on the outside of the engine block. Of course, they could go the route of STS turbo, and mount the snails underneath the car, but they’re probably just going to stick to the supercharger…for now.

With that said, details on the new GT500 have not exactly been forthcoming. While we can expect the new Shelby offering to get Ford’s 5.0 engine, the Blue Oval has been mum on what to expect in terms of horsepower. With the base GT getting a one hundred horsepower bump by going from the 4.6 to 5.0, will the next GT500 slither past the 600 horsepower mark? We’ll have to wait and see, but with the current GT500 already making 540 horsepower, it wouldn’t take too much effort to get it up there.
