Now I'm in need of help

Took my car to the Hobby shop today and put her up on a lift to check out the clunking I had. Well it was my exhaust and I loosened some bolts and realigned it. Then noticed a large amount of oil from my dif. Seems the seal from the driveshaft going into the dif is shot. I'm close..but could use some guidence here. So anyone down to give me a hand I would appreciate it. -Shane

the ring and pinion has to come out to replace that seal. Make sure you REALLY tighten that pinion nut with an inpact of a big torque or breaking bar.

impact gun wont torque it enough.......it needs a lot more...ask CWO....he is the resident expert of gears here

Yeah been with CWO several times when doing this and that part I think I have done. The guys are like..yet..and he is like..not even close..lol! Has to have certain amount of drag with the torque wrench or keep going! Now is def the time if I am gonna do gears....augh...-Shane

Your pinion bearings may be shot which caused the seal to start leaking, a rebuild sounds like your best bet since it's your DD and not the toy as you have stated. It simplifies the repair quite a bit since you are not going to have to go and reset the backlash or pinion depth (it would be a good idea to check them though) unless you go with the new gears. An Impact gun (a good Impact gun like an IR231 with high enough psi) will have enough force to crush the spacer but it's a bit dicey getting down to the 12-15 Inch pounds of rotational force or preload (I'm pretty sure thats the spec). Before using the Impact I'd coat the bearing with some grease and gear oil to try and protect them from vibration though. Just my .02 cents.

ever think of 3.90's? 3.73 won't do much for a mach with stock 3.55's... and since you don't want 4.10's, it seems like 3.90's is a gear you should look into. :)

Thanks for all the replies guys! I had motives in my 02 supercharged GT and she was pretty fast along with a a 2800 stall. 7.5 in the 8th actually and wow was she a money pit! I consider her my first wife but now on too the second along with a mistress. :flute: Think I will go with 4.10 gears but it is gonna take me a month to get all the parts together due to funds. I love owning a house that's not rented and paying rent in California! -Shane

If it's not a Ford Motor Sports gear then it might not be so easy to install. Either way, I really dont care. Shane, when your ready to upgrade just let me know. I'll come by to offer some technical assistance and lend a hand. Make certain you keep that diff full of gear oil. Smoke coming from the rear of the car is not a good thing.

Gear choice for you.....4.10!!!!

Thank you very much, gonna go with 4.10 and guess I need to check the level cause it's leaking pretty bad. It will be Ford Racing though cause I have heard the same. Will start looking for the parts list of needed items. -Shane

Yes, the kit is all you need. I see the seal in the picture.

Add two quarts of gear oil, one bottle of friction modifier and one tube of RTV to seal the cover and you're good to go. It's also a good time to add a girdle!!!

Thanks!...I need one for the Cobra first at nearly 600rwhp! The Mach....maybe....lol
