Quick question about smog.

If my car fails smog, do I have to bring the failed certificate or whatever to the DMV to get the red tag, or do I get that tag at the smog place? The car is currently unregistered, but I have posted the fees. I know I have to have it towed to the smog facility, but if I get the tag at the test station, I could just drive it home.... Hmm. Any ideas?

The DMV issues the temporary operating certificates you see in people's back windows. In my experience, if you're not a jerk to the DMV person, they are quite nice about it. :-P

Wondering where I am!?!?
You should be able to get a 3 day Temp Reg to take it to the smog station.

EDIT:

Don't waste your time at DMV, find one of those little off site places that do Registration. They do all of the leg work for a small fee and you will get your Temp within a couple of days.

My grandma has AAA so I'm going to have her add me to her plan and do DMV stuff through them.

PROBLEM here though, is I have the car in my name, and because it is in my name, it can't be insured on my parents policy like the past cars have. And because it is not smogged, I cannot drive to the smog station to get it smogged. So I have a feeling it WILL have to be towed...

Here as in right now in Santee with me. Car is in the driveway unregistered because it can't get smogged. But it's in my name, and it can't be added to my parents policy because of that. So I need to get it insured on my own policy. BUT, they won't add it to a new policy until it passes smog, therefor to get it smogged it needs to be transported to a smog test station. And that's IF it passes.....

Santee, got it!

What type of AAA does Grandma have?

If it's Premium, there are free tows available. If not then you are stuck paying to have it towed to a Smog Station and back. See if the Smog Station has any hook ups with a tow company.

I have a feeling it's premium, she pays for it still, even though she doesn't drive or anything... But yeah. I'm going to be talking to her and see what she has. I gotta do an oil change first. Though.

No the red temp tag is so you can drive a none registered vehicle... there would by no way to smog a car if there was no red tag... just go in and ask for a one day permit... it will have the month in a number (march so it will be a 3) you slap it in your window and drive to smog shop... then you can even drive to the DMV to get your tags the next day because the police officer wont know its a one day all he knows is you have some kind of temp..

there not going to hit you right away... and if they do just explain the situation

Alright, thing still is with insurance too, I'll be uninsured with it until I get it smogged. At least if I get the red tag, the cop can't pull me over because he's just being a pita!

Are you insured on any other vehicles?

If so, most policies cover you not matter what you are driving.

Yeah, I'm insured through all-state. I'm insured on all of OUR vehicles through the policy, so are any of our "friend" drivers. But I'm not sure it would cover me in another car. I'll ask on monday.

You should be insured then.

Ask them if you carry your insurance card are you covered.
