Did it just start whining, or has it been whining since you purchased the car? If it just started whining, you better get top off your oil.

Depends on what type of gears were installed and how the install was completed. Some, less expensive, gears make noise almost every time. Also, the pinion depth could be off just a little. But whining in both acceleration and deceleration is probably a pinion bearing going bad.

Probably cost the same as if you put a whole new gear in. Its going to be the same amount of labor. You might as well buy a new gear so you know what's in it and you know its good.

ok thx for the input looks like a gear install day in the near future
Best thing to do is put the car on the lift and run it through the gears and make it whine, then we'll know where the noise is located. Don't dump money where its not needed.

We can put it up on jackstands in my driveway and check it out as well.

If you want to put it on jackstands, you'll know where the noise is coming from. If the noise is in the rear differential, a gear change is needed.
