Register out of state?

Fighting Sailor

Hey Y'all,
I'm looking at trying to register both my ponies in Texas. (from here in California) I took a look at the TX DOT website and it looks possible.
$70.30 instead of $320.00 ? have any of y'all done this through the mail in forms? how long did it take?
Thanx,
Stephen Vick

I'm gonna do it, just found out I dont have to drive there. I can download and fillout the forms and mail them in w/ the fee.
I love living in CA but they are soooo sticky when it comes to our vehicles. For instance I can't use any of the online DMV services without a CA license!
Plus... The registration fee is outrageous! I thank God I am a resident of a state not run by liberals.

yea i just got mine registered and it cost me 1000 bucks. but at least now i have my plates and can legally drive. i tried to get it done in ohio but they needed the car there for a vin number inspection. so that plan backfired. its all good though!

I started looking into it today after getting off the phone with DMV. I recently moved a few miles up the 52 from my old place. I wanted to a) register and b) change my address. Sounds easy? Noooooo!
Can't change my address (online) without a California license! Tried talking to them on the phone, couldn't make the woman understand that I am a Texas resident serving in California. 1st she thought I was in Texas trying to get CA plates next she thought I wanted to change my residence, then she told me I should call texas to renew a Texas registration.
I told her that had I had a Texas registration I wouldn't be talking to her!!!
Bottom line, due to my TX license I have no online option......
So I started checking online for TX and found out how much cheaper it is to register there OMG! The VIN can be verified by a provost marshall (JAG for us). and yes it must be done by mail, but I think it will be worthwhile.

register it as an out of state residence. CA plates with half the cost. Since your military it won't be a problem. You can do this at Miramar it's a 170 or 190 dollars and you have the tag with in three to four days

The only thing about registering your vehicle elsewhere is you have to pay taxes on them again. I just did my Bronco in West Virginia which is my home of record. They will make you pay the property tax on it like you just bought it but after that you are good. No more smog to deal with but most bases will require you to pass atleast one to get your decals. Hope this helps.

Texas waives the taxes for military out of state. I just found out about the Nonresident military exemption in California. I am going to go with that option.
This begs the question; why didn't the DMV tell me about this option when I called? they need to train their people better. I would've run right over there and done that, instead I wasted 2 days.
Texas, on the other hand, knew exactly what I wanted and had answers ready for me, I was on the phone with them 5 minutes tops.

It is done... I registered here in CA. Now, for all of y'all military out there....
If you want to register in CA and dont like the CA price, you fill out a military exemption form (available online). Take it with you to the DMV w/ your military ID and out of state license, and low and behold they register your vehicle at your home state rate (no extra tax). I got my 07 shelby and my 06 sixer Vert both registered for $182.00 total. I also found out that for TX residents in the military do not have to pay the extra tax if they register from out of state.
I went through alot of stress over this , I hope my experience helps somebody else.
