Renting a car while under 21?

I'm trying to find a car to rent, and it's hell being 19 and trying to find one. I'm planning on driving out to phoenix from sunday night to wed night, and I want to rent a car to do it. I've found one place that will do it for 280 total, but I have to have my own insurance...

Anyone know anywhere else I can get a rental being 19? My record is perfectly clean, never even been stopped. Never been in an accident, I'm CEVOII (evoc) certified... Should it really be this hard? So yeah, if anyone knows other places, or has any hooks ups, could you let me know? Thanks, TJ

BTW, the place I found was Atwest.

Most car rental company will charge you a under 25 premium on top of the regular daily rate. But if you have to rent a car, have you tried the bigger companies, like Alamo, Budget, Hertz? They usually have no problem renting cars to under 21.

If not, then you may have to go to places like rent a wreck or something similar.

you guys must be lucky. when i was 20 i tried to rent a car when mine was in the shop. it was going to be really expensive and they said i had to have some "super" insurance policy. way more than the coverage i had at the time. this was in FL, but i thought it would be consistant throughout the country

I never had a problem renting from any company when I was in the military and under 21. They just charged me the under 25 fees. But like Boosted said, maybe because I was in the military. Can't really tell ya. But its pretty much up to each individual company and their rental policy regarding renting to under 25 and under 21.

I do have my insurance, but I need have full coverage, and right now I only have liability because the cars I do have, It's not worth the extra cost for full coverage. Danny, yeah, they usually have no problem renting to 18+ if in military. I'm going to be calling up a few of the bigger places tonight and see what they say.

I have much experience in renting cars ! It seems a decade ago no one under 25 could rent a car but things have indeed change :)

Enterprise, Budget and Hertz do rent cars to people under 25 there are a few stipulations though....

If you do not have a credit card you have to put down a deposit (which is for ANYONE without a credit card) this deposit is used for the balance at the end of the trip and if anything is left from the deposit it is then refunded to you.

And you also can only rent the "economy", "compact" and "standard" classes, you can not rent the convertibles, SUV's, vans, etc.

With those rental agencies listed above you do not even need your own insurance. You purchase their insurance which is anywhere from $8-$15 dollars a day.

Just got back from Phoenix... :p

I got stopped on the 8 right before yuma for 92 in a 70. Officer walked up to my door, noticed my jacket. Asked where I worked. I told him, he then asked for just my license, gave it to him. And he said you're going to learn something today. A lot of officer don't like to ticket paramedics. Have a nice day. And handed back the license. Didn't run me, or check insurance / regs or anything! I was surprised!
