Hey all, is the tensioner pulley supose to bounce alot when the car is idleing? Mine is moving up and down so much that my belt is trying to jump off the crank pulley.

I changed my belt last night and the arm seemed to have good tension on it. But when the car is running, the tensioner is letting the belt get loose.

Is my tensioner bad? anybody have this problem?

Sounds like the belt is a bit too big or the spring in the tensioner is giving up the ghost.

I would guess that the belt is just a bit too long.

The belt is tight. Same size I have been running for 2 years, just different brands.

it's been running fine for the last 6 months. Untill just Monday, It started squeaking and then it started shredding the belt and popping yesterday. So I got a new belt last night, same size and put it on. When I cranked it up, it started popping and was trying to come off the bottom crank pulley.

I'm praying that it's just the tensioner has got weak, but not sure.

Hopefully it's not an internal problem. Last year I bought a cheapo '91 Buick Regal to help an unemployed family. After a few months, the belt started jumping at idle right at the tensioner. Turns out the main crankshaft bearings were starting to sieze and every time it would "catch", it sent the rest of the mechanical parts (camshafts, balancer...etc) into a "hicup" causing the belt jumping.

It can be as simple as the tensioner bearings though. It's definitely worth having a reputable shop check it out.

Lol, I found it.. Was the balancer pulley. It has moved out about 1/8th inch. The rubber molding has let go and the pulley is starting to come apart.

Going to replace it tomorrow.

thanks for the replys from everyone helping me out.
