so i am at a loss for what to do... car had overheating issues a while back.. was a clogged radiator and failed thermo.. ended up going through and replacing the radiator and heat excanger. did a complete flush of the system . took it to jba to do their magic fluid suck flush thing where they hook up the machine.. worked fine for about a month or so.. then just yesterday it overheated again. the only things i havnt replaced is the water pump.. anyone think this could be the prob? i am at a total loss as to what to do or even what road to take.. worst case i really hope its not warped head or cracked head. there was never a burning antifreeze smell either when it was overheated.

any help would be appreciated.
its a 2004 cobra....

Check all your symptons of a blown head gasket being coolant out the pipe or water out the pipe, water in the oil or coolant? You can also put a funnel in your cross over tube and start the car and if you see ALOT of bubbles then its a blown head gasket. Make sure you tape the funnel with electrical tape to create a seal. -Shane

might sound stupid... but are your fans turning on?... just throwing stuff out there. i know ive missed some of the simple stuff when i thought it was a huge problem before

Well first off, I agree that you need to see if it's leaking or blowing coolant from somewhere. Check all the usual fan issues and such. Make sure the fan kicks right on when you hit the AC. The issues about the head gaskets, unlikely, IMO, unless you seriously overheated it. Some radiator shops or dealers have a tube they put over the radiator fill tube, or in your case, the coolant recovery tank. The color in the tube will change color if there is exhaust gas in the water. Is there steam coming out the exhaust? That's a pretty good sign once the car is hot and any condensation in the mufflers has burned off. Next check is the oil. Water blowing into the oil via a blown Head gasket, warped head or deck surface, will turn the oil milky colored. Believe me, if you see that last part, you'll know it in a second. You can always pull a plug and check for moisture or rust as well. Hopefully, it didn't get too far to the point of a blown head gasket. That's going to be a big job, but don't jump to that conclusion just yet. You can do a compression test, So many possible issues.

Lets hope it is something simple. I troubleshot the SIMPLE stuff for a while before I finally found it out to be a blown head gasket. Eventually the coolant came out the exhaust, none in the oil or water but my exhaust was pressurizing my coolant system. Here was another tell tell sign. -Shane

If everything checks out fine with the fans and no head gasket blown, you might want to check and see if your gauge/sensor is working properly. You have to believe your instrumentation, but you might want to heat it up and then shoot it with an infrared gun to check temp at the sensor location.

God only knows what EMilio did to it....... What thermostat is in that car? Is it working right? Do those even have one??????

thinkin i am going to upgrade to an electric waterpump and check for blown head gasket and head warping.. thats about all i can think of.

so could this prob be because of a possible thermo installed backwards? would it hurt to run with no thermo? prob would just take longer to warm up maybe? i dunno i started the car got it to running temp... then parked it seeing if it would get hot again.. had a slight smell of burning antifreeze.. not strong so maybe from the other day? but i go down to the thermo housing feeling the tubes going into it.. and really only half the thermo housing was hot to the touch and the other half was not.. and not all the tubes were hot.. so maybe this could be a backwards installed thermo? could that be making this problem?

thermo installed backward would probably cause this yes... the spring should be down.

what thermo is currently installed? you could always try running with out one just to see if its the thermostat

I dont suggest racing or any thing realy hard with out a thermostat. the easily flowing coolant will cause too much of a heat cycle on the heads during WOT.

Running without a thermostat is fine until the water actually gets hot. It will run cooler for longer, but once it gets hot it will not get cooled off in the radiator because it will never stop in there for any amount of time without a thermostat present.

ahhhh gotcha.. yeah its got a 160 degree thermo in there now... the thing about the thermo on my car is.. it requires draining the coolant almost fully due to it being at the lowest area. this thermo is in a weird spot..

I don't think that the thermostat is the issue. That car was ran completely out of water before and may have permanant damage. Is it under any kind of warranty?
