Hey all just a reminder that with summer here already, we need to go about doing things safely. You and your families need to. You can not protect against every possible issue that will come up. But you can mitigate some of the outcome by wearing the right safety gear and such.
Reason I bring this up is my 5 year old had an accident today that landed us at Balboa Naval Hospital for 5 hours.
He was riding his bike with myself and his sister. We went down a slight hill that he has been down many times before. He has been riding a bike for several years now and is pretty skilled at it for his age. Well he was coming down the hill on the sidewalk. He was just told to go slowly as he had to be able to turn at the bottom of the hill to go onto our street. He did not listen and was going too fast. He closed in on running into my bike and decided to bail toward the street. Normally that would have been ok. He landed wrong coming off the curb. His front wheel turned to the right sharply. This caused the entire bike to tip and flipped him head first into the pavement. YES he had a helmet on! Well he slid to a stop entangled with the bike. He immediately started to scream at the top of his lungs. I have never heard him scream that loud. I had just caught the end of the accident over my shoulder. I stopped as quickly as I could. I got to him and the dark thick red blood was flowing. As he was screaming the blood was coming out of his mouth and was everywhere. His shirt was soaked and so was the ground around him with the blood. I grabbed him, took him into the house, and attempted to stop the blood from in his mouth. I couldnt. Michelle called 911 and they responded. From there he was taken to Balboa for evaluation and treatment. They were worried the shot to his head may have injured his neck. The kid was in one of those full body brace things for transport. He thankfully stopped screaming when I made him put a towel in his mouth. He was really a trooper at the hospital. He had the cute Dr too. They checked inside the mouth and he never flinched while they opened the gash on the inside of his lip to check it. He had to have the injuries scrubbed with a brush, soap, and water to clean them. He never made a sound. He was amazing at the hospital. He received lots of praise from all the staff there for the way he carried himself. Anyway, here is some of the carnage from the accident........
The medical staff said that with the injures he has, it is no doubt that he would have been staying for awhile without the helmet. he most likely would have cracked his forehead and caused a concussion, fracture, or some other combination of them. His helmet had some warpage and some shredding to the front of it now.
Thanks for looking and stay safe this summer.
