Congrats, man! Best of luck to you both... my wife and I had our first date 25 years ago this Valentines Day.

***DISCLAIMER***

When you get to be my age, and have been married as long as I have, the 'upgrades' are much spendier... the last one I got her retailed for over 5k!! That is BLOWER money, folks!! We only paid 2400.00 plus whatever they gave her for the trade-in, which was like 1900.00 or something, but damn!

Ya gotta love 'em... and besides, she puts up with me and my muscle car disorder...;)

Hope you don't pay too much of something that is only I-1 to I-2 quality, with H color, too bad you aren't out here in San Diego, my Dad's pawn shop would give you a killer deal on that, it would probably cost you at least twice as much if you buy it from a retail store. Actually, oval's and Marquise cuts look larger than rounds of equal size, I reccomend, if you can afford it, get atleast an SI-1 or SI-2 clarity stone. Also, if you put an H color Diamond in yellow gold you won't notice the color as much compared to white gold. Also, fancy shape diamonds make any color come out more than if it was a round brilliant. If you want to see if they know what they are talking about, first ask them what the best color grade a diamond can be ( the answer is a D), also ask them if they know the cut grade of the diamond, and ask about the 4 C's if they didn't already mention them to you. Also make sure that the diamond doesn't have a really thick girdle or very deep pavilion, that just adds weight without adding beauty. If you want, I will give you Rapaport Diamond prices for the size and clarity of the stone tommorow. Then you can see how much they mark it up, unless you don't want to know.
