Tail Light Tinting-Cheap and Easy

GT400SC

Want to tint your tail lights on the cheap?
Looking for an "easy" way to get that expensive effect?
Well look no further, here is my method.

Disclaimer: Do this at your own risk. To the best of my knowledge, it's NOT reversible. I am not responsible for any trouble you might get into because of this.

I have an extra set of taillight lenses and I decided to tint them. There are people who advertise that they will tint your tail lights for $50-65, some for a little less if you EXCHANGE yours for their tinted set.

You can do it for $6 with Pactra Window Tint spray. This is a 3 ounce can of tint made for the windows of polycarbonate remote control cars. Your tail lights and head lights are polycarbonate too.

Cost of one can is about $6 in hobby stores that sell remote control cars and planes and accessories, such as Hobby People.

Remove your tail lights, wipe them down with denatured alcohol (rubbing alcohol will do). Allow them to dry completely. If there are any areas to mask off, do that first, then wipe down with alcohol.

Position the tail light so that the surface to be coated is face up. Follow the shaking directions on the can of tint and spray the lense until you are happy with the amount of tint. The more you put on, the darker it gets.

Allow to dry face up as the tint likes to find it's own level and flow out smooth. You should end up with an even-thicknes layer of tint. Allow to dry several hours before handling. Remove any masking right after spraying.

That's all there is to it! Save yourself a TON of money and DIY!!!

I did BOTH of my lenses with less than half of the 3 ounce can. On my paticular application, I chose to NOT tint the backup light, so I masked it off. I also masked the plastic housing outside the actual lense to avoid getting tint on it as well.

I dunno, haven't touched them as I am still letting them "cure" and harden.
Maybe a clear coat might be necessary, not sure. I don't see it being any easier to scratch than anyone else's coatings.

Gibs, you can do it yourself! Do it on a friday night, let them dry overnight and put them back in in the morning!

I plan on doing this with mine. I have NiteShade though.. A few friends have it done, and it looks alot darker, but they light up as if there was nothing on them.
