i have replaced axels and such and removed the gears in older trucks it real cant be all that hard to do it urself just need fluids gasket and all that
Ok, you will need the normal Metric set of wrenches and sockets as well as a 27 MM Deep socket(Pinion nut, but I'm not sure if thats right size). A dial Incicator that has a GOOD base/fixture to do the backlash check as well as an INCH LB. Dial Indicator Torque wrench to do the pinion preload check for rotational torque. If you decide to do the axle bearings, a slide hammer with appropriate puller as well as a bearing Installation tool/driver set(btw, the bearings I've seen in the Install kits are usually wrong, go to the dealer and get the right axle bearings and seals). The differential bearings, you will need a press(to Install the new bearings) and a Pee Grinder and chisel to get them off(my fav method, cut the inner bearing race almost through, then split it with chisel being carefull not to miss!). You can use the the old bearing piece you cut or pressed off to press on the new ones with. for the pinion bearings, a very long sturdy punch will do to get behind the races installed in the housing if you don't have the removal tool. Installing them, refer to the bearing race driver tool above mentioned. care should be exercised Installing the pinion bearings, make sure they are fully seated and not cocked or scratched during installation. Do yourself a favor also for the gear lube, get one of those hand pumps and a long hose that screw into the bottle for filling, the 2005-present don't have much room under there. you will need to drop the factory pan hard bar and the sway bar just to get to the damned cover btw. Just my .02 cents, have fun!
