2009 NMRA Real Street Champion Tim Matherly debuted a new 2010 Mustang GT this week at the PRI Show in Orlando Florida. Tim acquired one of the first body-in-white 2010 Mustangs from Ford Racing 18 weeks ago and built the car at his MV Performance shop located in Statham, Georgia. Tim has parked his championship winning 2001 Mustang but has carried over the trademark paint scheme to his new ride.
One noticeable addition to the 2010 car is the 25.5 NHRA certified roll cage. Since Tim plans to run the car for several years, he built it so he could step up to a quicker class in the future. The cage also makes the car more valuable when Tim chooses to sell the car.

Tim’s 2010 Real Street Mustang will be powered by Ford’s 3-valve 4.6-liter modular engine. The heads and intake are stock and Tim runs a Procharger P-1SC-1 centrifugal supercharger for power. NMRA rules do not allow racers to port the 3-valve head so Tim has worked closely with Diablosport to get the right tune for his new combination. “I’m sure there are some hurdles I’ll have to solve with this new combination but we’ll make it,” said Matherly.
The reaction to the new car at PRI has been good with a lot of folks complimenting Tim on the quality of work. Tim built the 25.5 cage first and spent hours and hours piecing the interior together to appear like a street driven Mustang. One look at the interior with all the tubing, Kirkey race seats and Auto Meter gauges says this is one serious Mustang.

For suspension Tim has a Racecraft, Inc tubular front K-member/strut set-up and a Racecraft rear 3-link with anti-roll bar. “Mark at Racecraft has a pretty good grip on a suspension for the new Mustang,” said Matherly. “We have shared a lot of thoughts on how it should work and I believe we will be ok. We’ll have to play with clutch set-ups and the suspension to get it to where we want to leave.”

All Real Street cars have to run a manual transmission and that’s what Tim finds so challenging about the class. “I’ve always been the guys that says all racecars should have three pedals in the floor and I like the driver input.” Tim will use a Tremec TKO 600 and he works with Tremec to provide valuable feedback on race transmission development.

Tim built the car to stay at the front of the pack in NMRA Real Street. Word is that Real Street Class runner–up Bruce Hemminger is updating his nitrous combination to a centrifugal supercharger set-up. “That’s what makes us strive to come up with new stuff, it’s the competition in Real Street, said Matherly. “We’ll have this car out testing by the end of the month and plan to hit all the NMRA events in 2010.”

Tim would like to thanks Ford Racing, Racecraft, Brogola Fittings, Chassis Engineering, MV Performance, Pro Charger, Ram Clutches, Tremec, Quicktime Bell housing, Weldon Fuel Systems, Pro Motion Powertrain, Pro Power, Bassani, MPS Auto Salvage, Diablosport, Mickey Thompson Tires, Metco Motorsports, Trick Flow, Hole Shot Wheels.
