Mine does too. But after taking this fender off, we can pretty much assume it's like this all over. On my stock hood, the factory painted just enough underneath to let the underhood insulator cover the rest. There's no paint under the insulator. NADA!
This is the reason for repainting the fender. The derelict moron that did this went DEEP, to the metal. Cops took a police report and the officer said it looks like a pocket knife by the way the groove was extremely narrow and deep, maybe a boxcutter.
Anyway, it's gone now. Should look like new by tomorrow afternoon!
Finished wetsanding this morning and began polishing. I am using the same polising compounds and polishers as were used on the fiberglass hood.
Here's a pic of the beginning of polishing. You can see that the back portion of the fender is still sanded while the front is polished with the coarser compound.
After polishing the entire fender with the coarse compound, it was polished again with the finer compound and a softer polishing pad on the polisher.
Next will be the small stuff. Replacing the inner fender liners, putting the badge back on and replacing the small section of red stripe on the lower section.
I can't tell you how glad I am to get this done. I hated looking at that "scar" for the last several months. It just detracted from the car. People don't see the car, they see the scratch.
This fender was a bear in that the door and surrounding areas had factory orange peel. Not as bad as some cars but looking down along the door, you could see a minor "texture". Little tiny waves in the paint and I had to match them. This required sanding the fender LESS than I normally would. I didn't sand it smooth as glass because after polishing, it would have been smoother than the door and wouldn't look right.
So, I sanded a little less, left it slightly bumpy and then polished from there. It matches the door perfectly. If you stand off to the side and look at the body line or gap between the door and the fender, you can stand in just the right place and see half your reflection in the fender and half in the door. From there, you can see that the finish is the same on both sides of the gap. That's what I was looking for and it came out really close.
Gotta go put the stripes back on! The fender liner is in, wheel back on and badge back in place.
Cuz I haven't cut the letters. My decal cutter is being loaned to friend. When I get it back, I'm going to change the style of letters and do both sides.
