Hey boys, got a quick question. I found some chrome 17x9 cobra r's for dirt cheap brand new. Anyone else running this size rim? Will I have rubbing issues? Could I still lower the car with the rims? Havent found any help online yet. Thanks fellas
I dont think you should have any problems. You could normally go up 2 or 3 rim size without problems. And like dope3 says, the wall of the tires can't be to tall. Also depending on how much you're going to lower your car. Most lowering springs will lower about 1" to 1.5"
Stock ponies are 16x8. No springs as of yet but I am tired of the car sitting up so high. Looks like they will work. Most comments I am finding on the internet say that they work good. Thanks guys. Hope it works! Should look good.
I've got 17x9's with 245's up front and my rims actually rub the control arms at full lock. Weird. I'm goig to put 255's on it once I wear these out so the tire rubs and not the rim. I did modify the control arm a bit to help the rubbin issue also. My car also has H&R Race springs in it which are supposed to lower the car 1 to 1.5 in. I'm not sure if my car is just odd with the rubbing but you should be fine.
Alright, let's get serious about tires here. In the front of the fox body mustang you want to run a smaller tire then the rear. I recommend a 205 width and not more then a 225.
Running a 9" rim up front is not a good idea unless you run a spacer to push the rim out away from the control arms.
If you're going to drag race the car, you'll want a 15" rim. This will give you more sidewall to collapse during launch and provide a better hole shot.
If you're just searching for looks, 17-9 is alright but will require a thin sidewall that rides like crap. Unless you spend money on suspension and bushing kits, you're not going to enjoy the ride.
So, stick with the 16x8 for everyday driving and pick up a set of 15" rims and mount some slicks for the track.
By the way, If you truely want to lower your car in the front, I recommend drop spindles. Drop spindles will maintain the steering geometry of the car and lower the front end up to 2".
Yeah I called the guy and said I am passing on them. I dont want to deal with any problems just for new rims. I will eventually go 17x8 up front then 17x9 in the back. This is my slow daily driver so I am not worried about hole shots or anything. Just looks. Thanks CWO and everyone.
