One of the most iconic cars in the American lexicon is the Shelby Cobra. It is also one of the most rare cars, and few people are lucky enough to ever ride in one, never mind own one. That is why a vibrant aftermarket making kit Cobras has popped up around the car icon. One of the leading manufacturers, Factory Five, has been improving upon their initial design for fifteen years.
Factory Five just recently announced the Mk 4 Roadster, the fourth upgrade to their race-ready line of roadsters. A few months ago we got to take a tour of the Factory Five headquarters, where we saw the amount of effort that goes into each roadster.
The Mk 4 improves on what is already a superior vision of the 40 year old Cobra design by making the kit car more comfortable for extended driving. For example, both the passenger and driver foot boxes have been expanded to allow for more foot room. In fact the entire cockpit area has been enlarged to allow for extra comfort for bigger guys. Other improvements are more along cosmetic lines, like better concealed bumper mounting bolts and relocated seat harness mounts.
For those with a more performance-oriented mind, perhaps the biggest change comes for the suspension. The front suspension geometry has been improved and new spindles added. Out back the rear suspension has been improved to allow 4 or 3-bolt interchangeability for greater customization. The Mk 4 will be officially unveiled on February 13th at the Factory Five headquarters, and will cost approximately $1,000 more than the outgoing Mk 3.
