351w Project

Wondering where I am!?!?
Kinda scratching my head on this one.

He has a car that does pretty good right now, hell, he is running his and I ain't!

If he decides to build something on an engine stand, what's wrong with that?

If it don't work out, he learned a lot that most of us tried at one time or another.

I think it comes down to Ethan never really knowing what he wants. He's like a fart in a windstorm!...............never know which way he's going??

I feel he wants to do a 351w because his car has some issues. Those issues may not go away with the swap of a 351w. You can't just swap engines every time they have a problem.

That I can relate to!!

My wife and I dropped over 15k into an Off Road truck. We played with it for 6 months and took a BATH on selling it because it wasn't what we originally wanted.

Lol, thanks for the advice guys, I will go ahead and fix my exhaust and get the little things done for now. Then, as soon as I get out, if my attempts at repair fail, I will pull the engine out and see exacty what the problem is, if I can fix it, then there is no use in spending the money on a new block. Oh, and I like your analogy Orange, agan thanks for the advice. I like the idea of a Roots-type blower though.

There is not a roots type blower that I know of for a 351w. Roots blowers are harder on an engine too.

Yeah, but I am taking everybodies advice and sticking with a 5.0L, plus, if I want to Road Race, the 302 is lighter than the 351w, and it sits correctly in my car already.

You know, I've been thinking, I changed my mind about this too fast, this is something tht I want to do, and it is my money to od it with. You guys can say whatever you want, but this is something that I want to do. I have a tendency to change my mind a lot, and I'm sorry for that.

Now if you still want to go through with this when the time comes to actually buy something then I have a few tips for you.

1st one is to get a 351w that is already a roller block. I believe that the 94-up 351's were rollers. Reason is you will not have to spend extra cash converting an old one to a roller. The conversion lifters are $400 while the regular ones are $100.

2nd, Is to get with a referee if you plan to smog this puppy and get a list of cams that are emissions legal and approved in Ca.

3rd is price everything out and post up the list of parts that you come up with and we can help you get that thing matched up and fit everything into your budget.

If you have questions post them up. I can probably answer the majority of them for this swap. Be prepared for things to not fit right and modyfying things will be unavoidable. :)

1st I was thinking of getting a 5.8L sportsman, siamese bore cross drilled, wet sump block for $1100. Is it worth the money to do that?

2nd the E303 cam that I have in my car right now should fit the 351w and is emissions legal.

3rd I figured out a rough estimate of my budget and I should have plenty of money left over for other stuff, like racing seats, road&track suspension pack, and maybe a few other things.

I decided that I want to raod race my car, like at Willows, and I was talking to this guy at JBA who has an EFI 427 95 Cobra that he races at willows, somebody make a K-member that moves my engine back about an inch and provides better balance and fitting.

The block is good, but if you are going to spend $1100 you mind as well spend $1700 on an R block and never have to buy another one again.

As for the E303, if you want to build a 351w with 302 parts then just build a 302. A cam is probably the most overlooked part in an engine in most cases. Without the right cam for your combo the engine will never perform as it should.

As far as extra money, Don't count your chickens before they are hatched. There is alot of work that you are not accounting for such as machining and assembly of the block. Labor ain't cheap.

Ya definitely plan everything out before hand. I didn't when I built my 347 and I'm about to finish it right this spring finally after it being in the car almost 7 months now. I ran out of money and have been broke since then so be smart and budget yourself accordingly.
