So i need some advice..... im up for orders right now and i want to go to Europe Naples, IT and Stuttgart, D have been available BUT my OSC and my detailer both want me to do recruiting or be a instructor since my evals are all EP plus my NEC's. Then yesterday i check my voicemail(im on leave right now in germany till the 15th) Our ship the USS Cleveland hasnt had a OS1 in two years. I have been the LPO of 27 people. Our CMC and OSC have been trying to get us a couple OS1's and have been talking to the USS Sterret(i think i spellt that wrong) since they have more then needed and want to swap 2 OS2's. Well the request was approved by TYCOM to do this swap and well my chief offered me first since it is a AIC billet (Air Intercept Controller) which is one of the highest NEC's for OS's. their schedule is in my favor in relation to deployment is a ways out BUT i would have ot do mando 2 years there ive already done 2 1/2 deployments and 4 1/2 years at sea. i hit my 5 yr mark in march and also am up for first for my first time. i know this billet/recruiting/instructor would help me more towards chief and or OS1 but i want to goto europe so bad since thats where i grew up. what is your thoughts and input on this situation? thank your for your time and input it is greatly appreciated.

well, do you plan on staying in the Navy???? If i was staying in for the 20 years do whats best to make rank. But if you think you can make it in the recruiting world, i say do it, you deserve some shore duty after 4 1/2 years.

Which matters more to you? Thats the only advice I can give you. Your career or your personal wishes. I would make a pro and con list. Helps me. Good luck.

If you plan to stay in, Instructor duty or recruiting duty would be very good for advancement. ONLY IF YOU ARE GOOD AT THEM!!!!! Recruiting can get rough at times and if you are not in the CRF then you dont get the accolades and such......but that will get denied by them. Instructor duty will pin you in competition with the best in your rate all the time. Yes you can stand out, but the odds are not as good to stand out until a couple years after being there. A new DDG would be good if that is what you want to do. I liked the new DDG's. Now I made CPO first time up. Was a 3 year PO2...... but I had a stall while trying to pick up PO1......I stalled while I was at RTC. That duty is your ticket to CPO if you plan to stay in. The advancement of people that push recruits is simply amazing. 1 in 3 that does the job gets selected. That is overall with no regards for the rating. If you have a rate that advances more than another your chances are better. It also stands out more and more every year to the boards.

It is a tough job with alot of hours involved but well worth it, and you actually get to affect the quality of people going to the ships. I did it and would go back any time they would let me. You have to be on top of the game at work everyday though.

If you need more advice let me know I will try to helkp you out.

Right now it would be a good time to become a recruiter because of the economy, i saw on the news that military recruitment percentages went up more then usual.

VP, if you know you are not a people person then don't go into recruiting. You already have that mindset and it will not be beneficial to you. Pushing boots might work for you and will help you with advancement like Gibs said. If you have 9 years after your current enlistment is up, probably should go ahead and do the 20. Take the RTC duty get your OS1 and go for overseas duty after that. You need all the help you can get knowing how close OS1 is. With your NEC and RTC assignment, you can have an edge on other OS2 that don't have it. Its all about selling yourself and getting an edge on your competition. Good Luck.

I think you got alot of good advice here VP. I would First go with Emilio's advice. Tell them you would like to be capped. If hey say no then tell them you need to recharge yoru batt. and want to try something else. Pushing boots will help you out with career ect. It is also a chance to get a new chapter started and meet up with MO chapter ( 3 hours away) I seen lots of stangs up there... LOL If your not a people person I wouldnt do recruiting duty.

I personaly thought after my shore duty what the hell I can go back to sea. I think Imade a mistake lol I hate being a ABE treated like crap...20 our days 24-7. I plan on cross rating to ABH they have a better choice of orders. I am going to either try to go to Japan for 2 years if they will let me do a split tour on GW if not as soon as I can I am going recruiting. I am going to try to pick a busy city though so that I can turn epople away and dont have to stroke the whole time on shore duty. I like to pick up perm recruiter and then finsih my time so I a set up to get out ect.. Its all up to you weigh out your options make a list with the good/bad What ever you do Good Luck!

good plan Phil...........the CRF community is alot of snakes in the grass though remember that. They eat thier young.....or the non CRF recruiters at least. The non CRF'rs get **** on all the time.

I got a buddy coming to SD from recruitig, he has a silver 03 Cobra. He will tell you all about it. He ended shore early to goto sea he hated it soo bad. And another from the great state of Texas that as a CPO works for a PO1 CRF guy....because his station could not make goal. Only because every female in west texas is on their second kid and all the high schoolers are druggies out that way...LOL a little more than that but you get the idea. He was an EP ranked PO1 at RDC duty. and A SOY on the ship with me....now just didnt get it done out there. Oh yeah his station was the only one without a CRF'r running it...now it has one and that guy that took over made CPO last year,......Wonder why, as a PO1 having a CPO working for you might have something to do with it.....

Just a thought....

I have a buddy that was stationed in Wash. as a recruiter. He loved it picked up first class ect. THey offered him permanent recruiting duty but he turned them down because he was a new PO1 and only had 8 years in so didnt think he wanted to do it the rest of his career. He did say now that he is on ship he wishes he would have stayed. I was depart career coun. at my last command. I had my NC1 ask me to convert but I was dumb and said ABE is all I know... I wish I would have done it on shore duty or crossed over to ABH oh well ... I enjoy helping people so I think I will like recruiting

Do what will make you happy. Regardless of the advancement oportunity. If you take orders just to punch the advancement ticket, and you are not happy there.... You will probably not do well there and it could hurt your advancement.

recruiting isn't for everyone that's for sure.. I don't mind talking to people (I'm the guy that's termintating shore/recruiting duty with the 03 Cobra headed to San Dog) but the politics SUCK.. if you screw up once, and not a CRF, well forget it your done..

You did end your tour early right?

I know it seems I hear about more people that dont like it then the ones that do like it.

dundon, FC1 George was relieved from the duty too.
