I want to put a 220volt outlet in my garage (NO, there isn't one by the dryer) so I can use my 220 volt Miller welder. The outlet will be on the same wall as the breaker box, actually the opposite side. The outlet will be inside the garage and the breaker box is outside the garage. So basically, I need to tie into a 220 volt double 50 amp breaker and run 2-3 feet of wire to a new outlet box. What does this require? 7 gauge wire?

See, I need someone with the know how!

I picked this up on Craigslist with a whole can of 7018 rod and it's about time I get around to using it.
I have a small 110volt arc welder and a 110volt wirefeed mig but I need a little more umph for thicker metals, so I need the outlet.

And yes, this welder is getting a paint job and DECALS!!!!!

GT400SC do you know if the welder is single or 3 triple phase? And did you mean 240v? I have to look at it.

Because Standard single phase service for homes is usually 120 / 240 volts.
220 volts is an old standard thats still loosely thrown around today.

220V which is not american standard. If you purchase a 220V unit, you will have to pay costly expenses to have your home rewired for 220V electricity.

GT400, Emilio is a lightwieght and is usually late for WS events......the last few have been the exception to that rule.......

Heck last year he completely missed an event.....I called him and he said he was just getting done detailing his car.....at that point I told him the show ended like 12 hours earlier.....He just yelled some obscenities and that was the conversation.....LOL

That's the welder, as stated right on the face plate. ( I had to go out in the dark in my jammies to read it!)

I have a dual breaker that is marked "stove" (which I can promise you is NOT 110 volt) and that double breaker is marked 50 amps. I believe I can tap that one and run it to my new outlet 3 feet away through a short conduit. The odds of me welding on this circuit the same time I'm baking cookies is about the same as me winning the lottery...........NEVER. So, I'm sure it can be done! But I don't know how and if anyone wants to earn a few bucks, I'll buy all the supplies and gladly pay for the work! It's all done in ONE corner of the garage!

As long as the Stove is not on like you mentioned before it should be ok. Why not run another breaker so it has a dedicated line? I would not want to share any line like that. But that is just my .02......

Run another line and do it the right way the first time.....Just in case the other situation where you need to weld and "Bake Cookies" at the same time.

For the simple reason there is no more room in the breaker box!

Trust me, I would if I could. There WAS one slot available when I first bought the house but I added a dedicated 20 amp line for my compressor. That left me with nothing available.

True, I could go out and get a whole new larger breaker box but that's too much work!

PS, I bake with my welder so the stove can go!

I would definately think about upgrading to a larger box though....(NO VP NOT THAT KIND OF BOX)
