Letter from GM

I know this is a Mustang Forum with lots of Ford fanatics, as I am one too. But this is more than an issuefor just GM........If they go under then Ford and Dodge/Chrysler/Whatever they are now will have a target on them too. Please help out to save 3 million AMERICAN JOBS!!!!!!!!!

3 Million people could be losing their jobs if GM does not get some help. They are asking for a loan not a handout.

This is also to help let Congress know you want to support the Big 3 not just GM but all of them.

Here is a copy of the letter that was received......

I am sure it is a form letter.

Dear

You made the right choice when you put your confidence in General Motors, and we appreciate your past support. I want to assure you that we are making our best vehicles ever, and we have exciting plans for the future. But we need your help now. Simply put, we need you to join us to let Congress know that a bridge loan to help U.S. automakers also helps strengthen the U.S. economy and preserve millions of American jobs.

Despite what you may be hearing, we are not asking Congress for a bailout but rather a loan that will be repaid.

The U.S. economy is at a crossroads due to the worldwide credit crisis, and all Americans are feeling the effects of the worst economic downturn in 75 years. Despite our successful efforts to restructure, reduce costs and enhance liquidity, U.S. auto sales rely on access to credit, which is all but frozen through traditional channels.

The consequences of the domestic auto industry collapsing would far exceed the $25 billion loan needed to bridge the current crisis. According to a recent study by the Center for Automotive Research:

• One in 10 American jobs depends on U.S. automakers
• Nearly 3 million jobs are at immediate risk
• U.S. personal income could be reduced by $150 billion
• The tax revenue lost over 3 years would be more than $156 billion

Discussions are now underway in Washington, D.C., concerning loans to support U.S. carmakers. I am asking for your support in this vital effort by contacting your state representatives.

Please take a few minutes to go to www.gmfactsandfiction.com, where we have made it easy for you to contact your U.S. senators and representatives. Just click on the "I'm a Concerned American" link under the "Mobilize Now" section, and enter your name and ZIP code to send a personalized e-mail stating your support for the U.S. automotive industry.

Let me assure you that General Motors has made dramatic improvements over the last 10 years. In fact, we are leading the industry with award-winning vehicles like the Chevrolet Malibu, Cadillac CTS, Buick Enclave, Pontiac G8, GMC Acadia, Chevy Tahoe Hybrid, Saturn AURA and more. We offer 18 models with an EPA estimated 30 MPG highway or better — more than Toyota or Honda. GM has 6 hybrids in market and 3 more by mid-2009. GM has closed the quality gap with the imports, and today we are putting our best quality vehicles on the road.

Please share this information with friends and family using the link on the site.

Thank you for helping keep our economy viable.

Thanks guys.

Stand by the American Brand whether you would ever want one or not!

Sure will... Being from Michigan myself, everyone I know there is somehow connected to the big three. Either they work directly for them or for a company that supplies them.

haha, this is the lettin i sent them...apparantly

"I am a consumer who believes it is important to have an American car industry in this country. I am asking for your help.

Some critics call helping America’s automobile industry a bailout. I strongly believe this is an investment to rebuild our nation’s economic engine. If we do nothing, the future our country faces during this downturn is clear. We will see even more economic upheaval, communities will lose substantial businesses and revenue, and thousands of jobs will disappear. The negative impact will be worse than anything we’ve seen in our lifetime.

We are at a crossroads, where given the opportunity, our nation’s auto manufacturers can lead once again. In 2010, we will see labor and health care reforms kick in. We will also see new electric vehicles introduced that will help reduce our nation’s dependence on foreign oil. And if it weren’t for the recent credit crunch, these companies would be on the road to succeed.

If Congress does not act, it will be the shortest and fastest road from recession to depression. Our economy is suffering enough. Please help prevent further job losses and devastation to our communities. I am asking that you give our nation’s car companies the opportunity to complete this turnaround.

We cannot afford to lose this cornerstone of our economy. We should not depend on other nations for our manufacturing capabilities or new technologies. And we do not want to contribute to an even deeper collapse that will leave too many people facing further economic uncertainty."

That is not BJ's words.....it is the GM form letter it sends to the congress people.....

Thank you everyone for supporting this......

This would also affect our troops too. The Hummers are made by GM right?

It will affect the trucking companies, and the railroads, and will trickle from GM to Dodge/whatever they are to Ford as the last stand.

I hope they get this loan.

I think GM can trim their lineup though...... Why are they competing against themselves with the SUV and Truck lines.........the truck/SUV lines need to be "GMC trucks by Chevrolet" Combine and they will sell more........

GM got too many products and pretty much all duplicate of each other. You're right, Gibs, they need to streamline their line. I'm thinking the same for Ford.

I thought it was BJ's words. I was fooled.

take away that choice. Its the same product. Heck, just put the badging on it and eliminate the separation and merge them back with Ford.

why do your think olds went under? there is a reason for different brands. i.e. pontiac vs chevy. built on the same platform to save money, but offer 2 completely different cars. all has to do with the global market. dont forget GM also has opel, vauxhaul, and many others worldwide

yeah, that's true. Didn't think of the overseas part of this process. but there definitely needs to be something done to help the American car company compete with the imports. Higher tariff maybe, if it will ever get pass congress. Heck, our cars get taxed to hell when goes overseas.

the only probelm is people have put it in their heads that jap cars are more reliable than us cars. they used to be, but nobody knows that nowadays its so close that you cant even make that call. now days with generic platforms american car companies can spend more time on quality and materials and still make an overall cheaper vehicle. and people also dont know that american cars are cheaper to fix than others because of the sharing of parts. they are more common and easier to get.

like I said, tax them when they come in and that will jack up the cost. force people to stay domestic with the lower cost. but many can't think for themselves. if they see many driving a particular import, they automatically think its dependable.

true. the only cars that have supprisingly good quality that you wouldnt expect are the little hyundais. those little cars are great and everyone thinks they are junk.

yeah, hyundai came a long way since the beginning. They do have some decent cars now. When I was shopping for a new car, I was looking at one, but decided to go with American and got a Saturn Aura.

I had 2 Hyundais and had 0 issues with them. In Washington we took the Santa Fe out through the snow filled mountain roads and it never acted like it wanted to slide around. I had to pass a Durango to make sure I put it safely behind me as it was sliding all over the road.....The gas mileage the SF got was a downer but other than that it was great!

Honda has all those commercials about their WONDERFUL GAS MILEAGE in the Pilot......24 MPG.....well now everyone assumes it blows away the rest of the American cars because that is the way it seems in the commercials.....truth is it is exactly 1 MPG rated higher.....what is that, accelerating a little faster from a light? going up a hill vice running on a flat road? 1 whole MPG and the Americans write off the US vehicles for some Jap POS.
