Beejay, if the gears are clashing when you shift: first change out the pawl spring. If you haven't done that since you bought the car.

As far as the binding goes, does the pedal make a ratcheting noise at all. The self-adjusting clutches tend to strip the teeth on the pawl or the quadrant. There is also a bushing installed on the pedal that may be binding. To check the bushing, all you have to do is diconnect the cable at the pedal and operate by hand.

That is the inexpensive look. But, I believe it's time for a new pilot bearing!!!

As for the fluid, Ford states DEXRON II Series D for a T-5 or T-50D. (5.6 pints)

The pilot bearing clearances change with the tranny temp and explains the differences Beejay is experiencing.

Gotta drop the tranny... the pilot bushing sits on the end of the input shaft. It's not terribly hard if ya have two guys and a decent tranny jack.

I have a shop manual for the 1989 mustang in my garage. It has worked me through several hair pulling experiences. If you would like some assistance or just want to borrow the book let me know.

I changed the clutch, bearing and spring plate in mine about 5 years ago with the book and a tranny guide tool.

I'm one of those guys that have owned the same mustang for 21 years. Bought it off the showroom floor in 1987. I look forward to meeting up with the San Diego bunch and working on some projects.

Beejay, not certain if I understood both? A pilot bearing is a technical name for a TOB.

You're right, I was thinking release bearing and TOB....my fault

No worries... the reason I remember that so distinctly is because I had to change a 4 speed in a 67 Camaro in a friggin' blizzard on the side of a highway in Colorado. Frostbite makes you remember things... LOL
