... you should come work on this boat because our ET's suck.

Our tv's all have static even on Site tv. Basic cable is snowed. our sailor phone is always broken ( more so the IT's on my boat but still ) uhh our media system for flight deck movies is broken and they have no intention to replace it. did i mention all their computers still have working net and oddly THEIR tv have perfect vision?

=D

ET is a good rate and worth hella money on the way out

im shaking my head right now. you want to serve your country or play video games? yeah people end up with sweet ass jobs but thats not your only reason to join. i tell people all the time, if your not here to serve, do things you dont like, go places you dont want to and take **** you might not deserve, your no good here, get out. if your not willing to give a part of you up then dont enlist. your gonna end up working for someone who can see that and is going to put you through hell. take it from me, ive seen it, and ive done it. maybe the navy is different, but surely its not that different.

Mav all that is all fine and dandy.. But, come on we are talking about the Navy everyone in the NAVY arent grunts.. We live on Ships plan and simple that is what is giving to us. We seat back and shoot whatever they want us too. Sorry we arent ground pounders... Only rate in the navy that see stuff like that is the ones deployed with SEALS/SPECWAR..

man i fix helicopters. im just saying i see it a lot these days, kids that sign up to do everything but serve. emilio youve been on dets you didnt want to go on, done things you didnt want to, i dont like when i see get kids that sign up for all the bs recruiters tell them. im not trying to come off over the top but its a commitment to your country, not a summercamp. if your joining for any reason other than to serve something bigger than you than you signing for the wrong reason. thats all im saying. when i told my recruiter that the army offered my 18k and i asked what he had to offer he said "a hard time" and i signed. lol.

Sounds like you talked to someone who does not like the navy.

If you think your gonna join and there gonna thank your every day for joining, and kiss your ass all the time...your wrong...there are way too many people who want to join right now..and well

you are not going to get shot at being in the NAVY... unless you get deployed to Afgan, or Iraq, then the chances increase.

On some of the posts above, you shouldnt join the military because you think its gonna be cake. Join because you want to make something of yourself, join because you want to serve your country, join because its what YOU want.

Some jobs have better perks then others.. thats just how it is everywhere.

I work on engines all day, i get drenched in fuel every other day. My wife knows the smell of JP-5 (jet fuel), im sure my kid will too. I work 10 hours a day on shore duty, my hands get cut, i hit my head alot, my feet hurt after work, im exhausted, and then i do it over again..

But in the end, i am satisfied, and i love my job. I wouldnt want to be anything else in the NAVY. I love turning wrenched, i love knowing how things work. The best thing about it is working on a motor thats been nothing but trouble, and seeing it get finished/checked at the test cell.

My Name is AD2(AW) Buterbaugh, and i love my job.

ANother thing Andy, is that the boat guys, most of the San dog crew see that navy completely different than the Aviation side.

Its two different sides, or ways of operating...

Plus those boat chucks arent right in the head... =P

I've been in the Navy 18 years, served on both coasts, been on 13 deployements and have been round the world several times over. Its been a hellavu ride. I joined at age 23.
I enjoy my job as a Quartermaster (I work in Navigation). It has its irritating spots like any job, but the reward has been a life of purpose.
Joining any branch is a life changing decision, not to be taken lightly. It can be a hard life at times, but it has its rewards.
I do know that if you go aviation (whatever rate) you will do some time on the flight deck. If you go engineering (whatever rate) you will do some time in the bilges. If you go Topside (whatever rate) you will do some time chipping paint. There is always grunt work needing to be done and the junior guys get it. It sucks to be junior, but.... You dont stay junior forever...

Every war we have fought since the Spanish American war has been preceeded by Naval casualties including the current one (remember USS Cole?)
The highest losses of any service in WWII was the USN...
And yes I have been shot at in places other than Afgan or Iraq..
Beats the hell outta kickin in doors with the grunts though...

well said fellas. all im saying is join only because you want to serve a greater good and your ready for a serious change. not knocking the navy but i know its a little more relaxed, in the corps its a pretty big change, but im sure every branch is to an extent. the change doesnt stop either. i think back to pfc morgan and realize that sgt morgan is the necessary evil the pfc hated/feared/looked up to, whatever day it was. if you join looking for a cake walk, someone will find you and weed you out. if you join to serve, someone will find you and do unto you as you deserve.

ok, i joined this post way late and dont have time to read, but what is the issue. why are you set on the navy....why not army/af/coast guard, or USMC....all pay the same. coast guard rarely deployes. you have a lot of options you just gotta know what you want. yeah, there are assholes with rank that will treat you like **** if they want, but over time you learn just to let it go and ignore it.

Dont downplay the coasties either, I have worked with them on many occassions... They deploy as much (or sometimes more) than the Navy and they quite often see action (even in home waters). A motto among coast guard lifeboat coxswains " we have to go out. We dont have to return" is just as true today as it was back in the day. I respect the Coasties a great deal.
Funny thing I dont see much discontent among the Coastie juniors either.
It 's damn respectable to be a Marine too. I was always amazed at the fortitude and drive of young Marines when we would pull em off the beach after what was a horendous combat tour... All the services have thier own traditions worthy of respect.

my uncle has been in the coast guard 23 years and has never been gone from his family for more than 2 weeks. he was a rescue diver for 20 years, then became a WO and hates life..
