Everyone in the navy, let me know how you like it. I'm tired of these on going job searches that lead no where.. I need a more stable job and the navy seems like the way to go..

was looking at being a aircraft mechanic.. Anyone else do that here.. what kind of work do you do.. I have a family so would i be put in base housing? The pay seems ****ty but do you pay rent a utility? what about food?

looking at going to talk with a recuiter friday... What do i need to know and also is there anyway to stay in this area... don't really want to move?

if you like not having control of when you go home Ever. leaving home for 4-8 months out of at least every other year. being underway for random amounts of time, having Mr newbie officer come in and tell you what to do after youve been doing it for 3 years already, being forced into a job that says this and that but you realize all you do is clean all day.

Do you enjoy breaking **** that isn't already broken just to realize your still going to have to jump through your ass to fix it within some one elses impossible time sched ( aka staying well after 1600 or even weekends )? OOOH what about training do you enjoy playing pretend fire in a space for hours on end while on a deployment or even better in port when you could be home chillin?

And now to the good part. its a steady job with plenty of down sides and plenty of up. Choose your rate choose your fate.

Engineers - First to arrive, last to go home.
Take a guess at what i am

Top side ( for the most part this is every rate that doesn't involv being an engineer ) many are easy to make rank in, such as STG's we dont have a single STG onboard that isn't a second class.

What Rates are you looking at before you even bother walking into the recruiting station.

also just so you know last i knew all the aviation rates are closed up and its damn near impossible to make e-4. a guy in my division had to cross rate to GSM in order to make 3rd ( e-4 )

The navy is what YOU make of it. Its kinda like every other job...somtimes you have an asshole for a boss...but you put up with it. Do alot of research about what you want to do. Talk to people in the rates for witch you wanna join. Also, Im good friends with a RINK (Recruiter In Charge) here in san diego, and I can help you with some information.

1st bit of information.

EVERY thing is closed right now, all but Certan CT rates, and Like two other rates...I can find out more, but You picked the WRONG time to try and join...we are PACKED...hell they are not allowing some people IN the navy to even stay in. But if you have any questions...let me know. Like I said, in navy is what YOU make of it, the people who have bad stuff to say...well most likely brought it upon themselfs. Take the good with the bad, and serve your country.

How old are you?

Info about CT rates

Yes, Aside from Nukes and CTs its all closed up right now till about 2011, BUT that cant stop you from going and talking, and taking the asvab...to atleast know where you stand.

Have you thought about the army? I know they are talking about opening some 30K slots and you dont necessarily have to be in direct fire with the army.

Foxman, The Navy has been good to me. And have nothing bad to say.. Yes there is bad time and more good times than anything. Just like above the Navy is what you make of it. Study your ass off to succeed. Look at all the military folk on here and what they drive.. Beautiful cars. So the pay is not that bad as long as you do not live beyond your means.

I am an STG. I have to agree with that. I have been to CO's Mast many times, never was LPO at sea, and was selected to CPO 1st time up....that was a few years back though. I made it right at 12 years. STG is closing up.

The USN is what you make of it. It also depends on the command you are at. The better the command, the better your opinion of the Navy. Every rate has a positive and a negative.

Just my .02.

Good luck no matter how you choose to go.

Never an LPO? How many 1st class stgs yall got?

Its weird, as an STS, alot of responisiblity is placed on the junior guys (if they are up for it)...Like I have the CO's go ahead to Qualify sonar sup....witch for Me, is the highest in rate...and carriers the most responibility with it (Safety of the whole ship...and telling the OOD pretty much wtf to do)...I like it

its a steady job that i'll agree with but if you dont already have the schooling you may as well forget much college if you end up on a boat. navy shore duty? you may as well consider navy a part time job with full time benefits. i'm personally not willing to put my self another 1.5 years behind to wait for the navy to POSSIBLY allow me shore duty.
